Muskegon Area Transit System Transportation Center | Muskegon, MI
The need: A new bus terminal that would serve as a central location for bus departures and arrivals, as well as providing in-house washing facilities and mechanical services for the vehicles.
The solution: Construction of a new 30,000-square-foot facility that included administrative offices, vehicle washing stalls, fuel pumps, and a complete mechanics garage, as well as storage accommodations for 16 buses.
The building was designed to be circular in form, conceived from the turning radius of a city bus. The design allowed buses to loop through the facility to stop for fuel, washing, and maintenance, and drive out in the same direction. The curved design was repeated in various areas of the facility, including rooflines, a structural colonnade, and concentric rings that radiate from the building's center point. The design received the 2005 AIA Grand Valley Honor Award for Building Design.
