Muskegon, Mich. – Hooker DeJong Architects & Engineers of Muskegon was honored by the Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing (OCCH) for their redesign work on an affordable housing apartment complex in Newark, Ohio.
Each year OCCH honors investors, developers, lenders, management companies, nonprofit and for-profit organizations, and government entities that partner with OCCH in the development of and commitment to affordable housing in Ohio. Hooker DeJong was recognized in the category of Excellence in Affordable Housing Preservation.
Trail West Apartments was an 86-unit apartment complex that Hooker DeJong architects redesigned and also included plans for the design of a new clubhouse. Trail West is managed by Millennia Housing Management which operates more than 7,000 units in seven states including Michigan.
David Layman, President & CEO, Hooker DeJong Architects & Engineers said, “We are pleased to be recognized for the work that we have done in affordable housing and particularly pleased that we were honored for one of our efforts in Ohio with the Millennia Company.”
The Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing is a nonprofit corporation based in Columbus that works with private & public developers to create affordable housing opportunities. OCCH works for the construction, rehabilitation and preservation of affordable housing throughout Ohio.

Columbus, OH—The Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing (OCCH) was pleased to host close to 600 affordable housing partners at its annual Partner Luncheon May 27th at the Columbus Renaissance Hotel.
The Partner Luncheon recognizes the many investors, developers, lenders, management companies, nonprofit organizations, for-profit organizations, and government entities that partner with OCCH in the development of and commitment to affordable housing in Ohio.
“We are proud to partner with the many outstanding organizations represented here today,” said Hal Keller, OCCH President. “Through their partnerships, OCCH has raised more than $1.8 billion in investment in affordable housing, creating more than 22,000 affordable units in Ohio and Kentucky. With our partners, we are able to accomplish our unified goal of housing working families, seniors, special needs populations, and anyone seeking quality affordable housing.”
Jack Kukura, Chief of Acquisitions and Tony DiBlasi, Chief of Asset Management presented the 2010 Awards of Excellence to the following partners:

- Excellence in Permanent Supportive Housing to Jefferson Apartments in Columbus, Ohio. Partners recognized in the project include Community Housing Network, Inc.; Amethyst; Jefferson Center for Learning and the Arts; MCR Services; Urban Order Architects, Inc.
- Excellence in Affordable Housing Management to Woda Management & Real Estate, LLC.
- Excellence in Affordable Housing Site Management to Janice Anderson, of RLJ Management Company, Inc.
- Excellence in Affordable Housing Relocation and Marketing to Amber Storie of the Model Group.
Susan Weaver, Vice Chair of the OCCH Board of Directors, presented the 2010 Carol Mount Peterson Resident Development Fund Awards—a program that allows OCCH to take a portion of its retained earnings and provide grants to its nonprofit partners in order to help residents access educational and employment programs, and support activities designed to increase residents’ ability to live more satisfying and productive lives. To date, OCCH has awarded 230 grants totaling more than $3,983,668 to partners.
Those receiving the 2010 Awards were:
Buckeye Community Hope Foundation for Nela Manor and Pleasant Meadow Village in Summit County; Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority for The Meadows and Rosewind in Franklin County; CAC of Fayette County for Ivy Glen, Riverbirch Greene, and Zachary’s Crossing in Fayette County; Community Action Partnership for Landmark Village in Greene County; Community Properties of Ohio for Clubview and Courtyards of Kettering in Muskingum and Montgomery Counties; Jennings Center for Older Adults for St. Rita Apartments in Cuyahoga County; National Church Residences for Tod’s Crossing I and II in Trumbull County; Tender Mercies for Harkavy Hall in Hamilton County; United North Corporation for United North School Homes II in Lucas County; Buckeye Community Hope Foundation for Bryan Senior Apartments in Williams County; Cambridge Management Corporation for Mayor Estates Apartment Community and The Village of Skye Meadows in Guernsey County; Episcopal Retirement Homes for Cambridge Heights in Guernsey County; LEADS for Central Hotel Apartments in Crawford County; and the YWCA of Canton for Gateway House in Stark County.
